2048

The team of authors composed of Ing. Kristína Šimoničová, PhD., Ing. Ľuboš Janotka, PhD., Ing. Helena Kavcová, Ing. Zdena Sulová, DrSc., prof. Ing. Albert Breier, DrSc., Mgr. Lucia Messingerová, PhD. received the SAS award in the category of Top Journal Publications for the publication entitled Different mechanisms of drug resistance to hypomethylating agents in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia published in Drug Resistance Updates.

The review discussed treatment with hypomethylating agents, which is the only treatment option for elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia, for whom intensive chemotherapy followed by bone marrow transplantation would represent a high burden. However, patients often do not respond to hypomethylation treatment right from the beginning or become resistant to it during the treatment. This publication provides an overview of the latest knowledge on the mechanisms of this resistance, focusing on its possible molecular causes. Knowledge of these mechanisms is necessary for choosing appropriate treatment protocols that would reduce the negatives associated with resistance. We are verifying these mechanisms as part of our research.
