About department

The Department of Biophysics and Electrophysiology (OBE) studies calcium ion channels in neurons and the heart. In neurons, we study the regulation of neuronal excitability by drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression. We also study changes in neuronal excitability caused by negative external influences such as inflammatory diseases, or positive influences such as physical activity. The aim is to understand their relationship. For example, whether drugs can replace positive influences, or whether drugs can suppress negative influences. In order to understand the mechanisms of regulation of ion channel activity and its influence by pharmacological agents, the department is also investigating how targeted changes in the structure of calcium channels affect their function and how the functional properties of the channels reflect their structure.
